A long time ago you discussed how you wanted to tell your patients "“So, do you prefer mildly condescending platitudes, or medications with a bunch of side effects?" Does there exist a credible list of such "mildly condescending platitudes. I am the type of person who probably misses on quite a few of those, yet often when I search for such advice I come up with stuff that is obviously BS; which makes me question the whole source. I thank you for your time.

Some of my favorite mildly condescending cliches. I try to be careful when I use these, because they can really come of as “you are a total idiot who has never considered the obvious thing”, but every so often I find someone who in fact hasn’t considered them and doing the obvious thing totally solves their problem:

1. Get enough sleep
2. Don’t work yourself too hard /  stay out of stressful situations
3. If you’re really stressed out, try doing breathing exercises
4. …or going for a walk to clear your head
5. Fake being well until you stop having to fake it; eg if you’re depressed, try to get out of the house
6. Have you considered quitting the job you hate / leaving the relationship you hate / not living with the family you hate?
7. If you’re anxious / insomniac, cut down on caffeine.
8. This temporary crisis in your life is temporary and you just need to hold on a little while longer until it ends
9. When you have a thought, check and see if the thought is really true
10. If you have a conflict with someone, try talking it over with them.
