Of course you can’t recall it. You live inside an information bubble that works very hard to ensure you never hear about it.
Here is a collection of death threats received from women just by one guy who wrote (an admittedly super-horrible) article:
“You’re a disgusting human being, consider a new hobby before you get yourself killed”.
“Please die and take your fans with you.”
“I hope you rot in a fire - a fire started by a female.”
“Literally kill yourself for the better of society.”
“The world definitely needs more sick scumbags like you to extinguish from the Earth”.
“Death sentence is an appropriate way to deal with people who objectify an entire gender, yes.”
“I hope you get run over by a car, they put reverse, and hit you again”.
“He is a piece of trash and if you meet him you should kill him.”
“I would probably kill this person if I ever saw him.”
“Disgusting, idiotic men like you should be killed.”
“You are literally scum, I’ve murdered people like you.”
“You should be castrated.”
“RT this to get the journalist who wrote this killed.”
“I hope your dick gets bitten off by a pack of hyenas and then you die of dysentery.”
“I’m going to chop off your dick and feed it to you.”
“You’re a disgusting piece of shit with a microscopic penis who doesn’t deserve to live on this planet”.
And about a hundred more. But at least it’s just manosphere bloggers, who write admittedly super-horrible articles, right?
An article on an anthropologist who studies the biological origins of rape: “As much as he tried to be clear that he was not making an excuse for sexual assaults, he received a series of death threats on his answering machine, and one detractor apparently attempted to break into his home. The university assigned a campus police officer to walk him to and from class.
For writing the "Why We Don’t Need Feminism” Tumblr: “Go fucking die in hell you dumb motherfucker if i ever meet you i’m going to rip your fucking guts out of your motherfucking skull and throw your useless piece of shit body into a fucking pit of maggots”
13 year old boy says it’s not necessarily wrong to make politically incorrect jokes, feminists accuse him of “supporting rape culture”, doxx him, post his home address. “If you can get home addresses for scumfucks, my knife is *awfully* lonely lately.” “Go suck the human shit out from underneath your fingernails and sanitize your outtie-bellybutton-lookin dick, idiot.”
I think Wil Wheaton - and a big chunk of the rest of the feminist community - honestly believe that no member of their in-group has ever done anything wrong, and that evil is purely an out-group phenomenon. They will probably continue to believe this, because they’re trapped in a media bubble that obsessively signal-boosts anything bad that happens to them, and obsessively covers up any bad behavior on their own part. Any attempt to get through the bubble gets reduced inside their own minds to - as he put it - “blah blah both sides blah”.
People ask me “Why do you get so upset at some random person from Tumblr saying ‘kill all men’”? And partly it’s because I’m a man and I’d prefer not to be killed. But partly it’s because I know if I don’t point it out when it’s happening, some ignoramus is going to make exactly this argument, say “Non-feminists = people who make death threats, feminists = kind respectful people, you disagree with me, therefore you are the kind of person who makes death threats and deserve to be hated by everyone.”
Or even better “I got a death threat for making this argument, therefore everyone who disagrees with me are death threateners”
It sounds dumb when you put it this way, but THIS IS HOW SOME PEOPLE ACTUALLY THINK.
