Are there any productivity techniques that you feel are helpful to you in creating such a high volume of high-quality blog content while also maintaining a busy professional and personal life? It seems like you get tons of shit done - what do you think it is about you that separates you from the people who would like to get as much done, but don't?

I’ve got to admit, I am like the least productive person in the world. I know that I am really good at looking productive, but my schedule looks sort of like:

8:00 - go to work

3:00 - get home from work on good day if not too many people are sick (I’m pretty lucky, my attending keeps a short schedule these days so I usually get a short schedule as well, and I’m not on call that often either)

3:00 - 5:00 - nap

5:00 - 8:00 - waste time on Reddit and social media

8:00 - 10:00 - write blog post or something

10:00 - 1:00 - waste time on Reddit and social media

1:00 - 2:00 - hang out with Ozy

2:00 - sleep

Given that I spend like six hours on Reddit and social media, plus two hours napping, I’m not really sure how I got a reputation for productivity, and I’m kind of scared of what other people must be doing.

I think maybe part of it is that writing is kind of an addiction for me - see http://slatestarcodex.com/2014/05/25/apologia-pro-vita-sua/ - which means I’m not going to suddenly not have enough energy to do it. Other people seem to have this same experience with writing on Tumblr, but not for writing long-form things. I’m not sure why I have it for longer stuff too. Possibly because I grew up before Tumblr and I’ve been blogging on LiveJournal or wherever for a really long time.

Anyway, don’t ask me for productivity tips. But if you want to know how to nap well, I am definitely your guy.
